I was born and raised in rural Vermont, and my husband and I still call Vermont home. However, we spend every winter on Kaua'i, the northernmost Hawaiian island. The tropical colors and ingredients on Kaua'i have been hugely influential in my cooking style, so you'll see that many of my recipes have a beachy vibe.
My approach to eating is to appreciate all foods in moderation. About 90% of the time, I focus on fresh produce, whole grains, and plant-based proteins. But I also love a good cocktail alongside some salty snacks and I enjoy baking, so you'll find some more indulgent treats sprinkled throughout my primarily whole-food recipes.
I've been a vegetarian for over 25 years and am a true lover of eating plants. Almost all of the recipes on this blog are vegan, and the ones that aren't have suggestions for making them vegan. I think that colorful vegetables and fruits are the most fabulous gifts from nature!
When I'm not cooking, you can usually find me doing some sort of athletic endeavor. I'm a weight lifter, hiker, yogi, and all-around lover of anything that moves my body. Long ago, I played both waterpolo and rugby in college. For each of the past three years, I've walked over 5,000 miles per year... that's an average of about 14 miles a day! For me, walking is a form of moving meditation.
